Spray Tans FAQ

• I will come to your location and bring my equipment, which includes a pop-up tent and an extraction fan that collects overspray. 
• Together we will find the best place to set up my tent, preferably where the best lighting is located . I also have portable lights if we need to use them. 
• After I set up my station, I will consult with you on the type of result you are looking to achieve.  
• You will enter the tanning tent & disrobe. 
•  Application will begin & will take around 10 minutes. I will tell you how to stand and when to turn. 
•  After your spray tan, I will make sure you are dry before you get dressed. 
• I will instruct you when to shower and how to care for you spray tan. 

• Exfoliate. Exfoliate. Exfoliate 
• Its important to shave and exfoliate 24-48 hours before your appointment. (Not the day of your appointment)  It removes the dead skin cells from the surface, leaving behind a smooth canvas. 
•  Its best to use an exfoliating mitt or an oil free scrub with lukewarm water. Avoid scrubs and moisturizers with oils that may stick to the top of your skin, creating a residue that could interfere with the spray tan process. 
•  Complete all other beauty services first, like nails, waxing, facials, and massages, at least 24 hours before your tan.  
• Drink plenty of water. Staying hydrated helps keep your skin soft and smooth while maintaining the perfect canvas for your spray tan. 

• Be sure to wear or bring loose clothing to your appointment.  
• Avoid wearing anything tight, like jeans, leggings, yoga pants, socks, sneakers, or long sleeves.  Tight clothing can smear and rub off the solution, especially around the knees, elbows, chest & waist.
•  I recommend a flowing sundress or t-shirt dress with flip flops.  
•  No makeup, no lotions, no perfume, no oils, and no deodorant. These items could create a barrier on your skin and prevent the solution from penetrating your skin.  Deep penetration of the solution is key to a beautiful lasting color.  

• Female clients can wear whatever they feel comfortable wearing and may choose to tan topless or naked to avoid tan lines. You have the option to wear whatever is most comfortable for you—like a swimsuit or underwear.
• During your tan, bronzer could transfer to your clothing but don’t worry! All cosmetic bronzers used in Norvell products are water-soluble, meaning it’ll come out of clothing in the wash.

• Avoid sweating or getting wet until your first shower. 
• I will recommend a time for you to shower and rinse off the spray tan solution after I see your skin tone. It could be anywhere from 6-24 hours depending on the color you want to achieve and your skin tone. 
• Use lukewarm water only for the first shower to rinse off the tanning solution.  Avoid using any kind of soap, shampoo, or body wash on your skin at that time. We do not want anything to interfere with the process. 
• It takes up to 24 hours for your tan to completely develop. 
• Do not worry if the color washes off after a shower; it is just the cosmetic bronzer that is being washed off and not the tan. The DHA in the solution is what is getting you tan. 

• To make your spray tan last longer keep hydrated with water and your skin moisturized.  
• Use a moisturizer that is mineral oil free like Cocoa Butter, Lubriderm or Cerave.  
• Some ingredients to avoid in your moisturizers

             *Fragrances 

             *Most essential oils 

             *Anti-aging products

             *Toners 

             *Hair removal products

             *Retin-a 

             *Make-up removal products 

•  Chlorinated pools, spas, and ocean water can increase the rate in which the skin exfoliates causing the tan to wear & fade rapidly.

The active ingredient in sunless tanning products is known as dihydroxyacetone (DHA). DHA is a simple non-toxic sugar, which gained FDA approval 1973.  DHA is the active ingredients that gives your skin a golden brown color. It is often derived from plant sources such as sugar beets & sugar cane. When applied to the skin, DHA penetrates only the outermost layer of skin, & does not absorb into the body or bloodstream. The color developed by the DHA usually lasts 5 to 7 days & begins to fade as the top layer of skin naturally exfoliates. 

• Everyone's skin is different, however on average 5-7 days.  
• Your tan will fade with your skins natural exfoliation process. 
• Their are a few common factors to consider such as skin type, workout routine, activities/lifestyle, and how you care for your spray tan that attribute to how long your custom spray tan will last.  
• Follow a good skin care regimen before & after sunless tanning will help a sunless tan last longer.  
• Exfoliating prior to a sunless tanning application, keeping skin moisturized afterwards and drinking plenty of water to keep your skin hydrate are essential.

• With all of the above being said, Norvell does NOT staff licensed physicians, therefore as you would before using ANY product on an expectant mother, we recommend each customer consult with their personal physician before receiving a DHA sunless spray tan application.
